In a land of Earthly beauty, one natural wonder stands above the rest, Icelands beloved Gulfoss or 'Golden Falls'. With a 105 foot double cascade Gulfoss is by far Europes most powerful waterfall. Surpisingly, at one time the Government planned to supliment the falls with a hydroelectric power plant, but a nearby farmers daughter underwent a pilgrimage on foot to Reykjavic, where she demanded unless the plant was stopped she would cast herself over the falls. After the nation overwhelmingly came out in her support plans were halted and the Government purchased the land for a national park.
Godafoss waterfall is situated in the 175 km long glacial river Skjalfandafljot. Former pagan chieftain Thorgeir threw the wooden images of the pagen gods into the river after christianity had been accepted in the parlimentary plains in the year 1000. The name of the waterfall, The Waterfall of the Gods, is derived from this event.
