Iceland sits astride the Mid-Atlantic Ridge part of the world, circling undersea mountain chain that is the locus of new crust formation. Iceland is formed by the spreading boundary of the North American and European Plates. This spreading is continuing to-day and the cause of the geothermal activity that can be seen on the island. Volcanic eruptions occur every 5-10 years on average. It is estimated that one third of all larva erupted since 1500AD is produced in Iceland.
